Capacitors are one of the main basic components in electronic equipment. There are three failure modes of ceramic capacitors: thermal shock failure; twist rupture failure; raw material failure.
Thermal Shock Failure
During the production of ceramic capacitors, the raw materials for making ceramic capacitors are different, and their thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity are also different. When the temperature is too high, it is easy to thermal shock and rupture, resulting in the failure of ceramic capacitors. Generally, near the interface of the exposed termination and the ceramic termination, where the machine tension is generated, it is prone to thermal shock and cracking.
Distortion and Rupture
Ceramic capacitors are picked and placed with the help of tools. During the pick and place process, the pressure of the centering tool is concentrated in one place, resulting in high pressure. The surface of the ceramic capacitor is prone to cracks, and the cracks will spread to the direction of the strong pressure. On the other hand, the ceramic capacitor will fail.
Failure of Raw Materials
1) The failure between electrodes and the rupture of the bonding line are mainly caused by the high gap of the ceramic, or the gap between the dielectric layer and the opposite electrode, which makes the dielectric layer between the electrodes crack and become a latent leakage crisis.
2) The characteristics of combustion rupture are perpendicular to the electrode and usually originate from the edge or terminal of the electrode. If the ruptures appear to be vertical, they should have been caused by combustion.
