For capacitors, miniaturization and high capacitance are constant development trends, with multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) experiencing the fastest growth.
MLCCs are widely used in portable products, but recent advancements in digital technology have introduced new requirements. For example, mobile phones require higher transmission rates and better performance, baseband processors demand high speed and low voltage, and LCD modules need thin (0.5mm) and high-capacity capacitors. Additionally, the harsh automotive environment places special demands on MLCCs: they must withstand high temperatures up to 150°C and include short-circuit failure protection in battery circuits.
Thus, miniaturization, high speed and performance, high-temperature resistance, and reliability have become key characteristics of ceramic capacitors. The capacitance of ceramic capacitors varies with changes in DC bias voltage, which lowers the dielectric constant. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the dependence of the dielectric constant on voltage through material improvements to optimize DC bias voltage characteristics.
Commonly used types are X7R (X5R) MLCCs, with capacitance mainly above 1000pF. The primary performance indicator for these capacitors is the equivalent series resistance (ESR), making them effective in power decoupling, filtering high ripple currents, and low-frequency signal coupling circuits.
Another type of MLCC is the C0G class, with capacitance mostly below 1000pF. The main performance indicator for these capacitors is the dissipation factor (DF). These products show significant low-power characteristics in circuits with TIR modules in GSM, CDMA, cordless phones, Bluetooth, and GPS systems. They are commonly used in various high-frequency circuits, such as oscillators, synchronizers, and timer circuits.
