Factors to Consider When Selecting Film Capacitors

With the advancement of electronic products, many capacitors have found good applications, securing their place on circuit boards and demonstrating their superior qualities.

 

It is well-known that film capacitors come in various sizes, rated voltages, and other characteristics, enabling them to meet the specific requirements of different applications. Common dielectric materials include oil, paper, glass, air, mica, polymer films, and metal oxides, each possessing distinct properties that determine their suitability for specific applications.

 Factors to Consider When Selecting Film Capacitors

Many people recognize film capacitors as a panacea for noise-related issues, but the value of film capacitors extends far beyond that. Designers often think that adding a few capacitors can solve most noise problems, but they rarely consider parameters beyond capacitance and voltage ratings.

 

However, like all electronic components, film capacitors are not without flaws. They can introduce issues such as parasitic equivalent series resistance (ESR) and inductance (ESL), and their capacitance can vary with temperature and voltage. Additionally, capacitors are very sensitive to mechanical effects. In voltage regulators, three main types of capacitors are commonly used for voltage input and output bypass: multilayer ceramic capacitors, solid tantalum electrolytic capacitors, and aluminum electrolytic capacitors.


When designers select bypass capacitors, and when film capacitors are used in filters, integrators, timing circuits, and other applications where actual capacitance values are crucial, they must consider these factors. Improper selection may lead to circuit instability, excessive noise and power consumption, shortened product lifecycle, and unpredictable circuit behavior.
