Thermistor is a type of sensitive element. According to the temperature coefficient, thermistors are divided into positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient thermistor (NTC).
When the PTC thermistor is connected in series in the circuit, only a small part of the voltage lingers on the PTC thermistor during normal operation. When the PTC thermistor starts up in a high resistance state, it must withstand almost the entire power supply voltage. Therefore, when choosing a PTC thermistor, it is necessary for it to have a high enough working voltage. At the same time, possible fluctuations in the power supply voltage should be considered.
The second factor is the allowable large current when the operating voltage is exceeded. When the PTC thermistor is required to perform the protection function, it is necessary to check whether there is a condition that allows the passage of large current in the circuit. Generally, it refers to the possibility of a short circuit. The large current value should be given in the data sheet. When used in excess of this value, the PTC thermistor may be damaged or fails earlier.
Therefore, when using PTC thermistors, you need to pay attention to the two factors mentioned above. If you have any questions about the use of themistors, you can consult a regular manufacturer for help. It is important to purchase TC thermistors from a formal manufacturer.
