A dash cam, often referred to as the "black box" of modern cars, plays a crucial role while driving. It acts as the vehicle's "third eye," continuously recording footage during the driving process and providing strong evidence in the event of a traffic accident, helping to protect our legal rights.
A dash cam requires a power source to operate, and there are two types of energy storage devices commonly used: batteries and supercapacitors. So, should a dash cam use a battery or a supercapacitor?
Battery: Batteries are known for their high energy density and long usage time, making them suitable for dash cams. A lithium battery with an appropriate capacity can support the dash cam's operation for an extended period without frequent recharging, providing convenience for the car owner.
Supercapacitor: A supercapacitor is an energy storage device with significantly higher power density and faster charge/discharge speeds compared to traditional batteries. This means that when the vehicle starts or the dash cam is powered on again, the supercapacitor can quickly release energy, ensuring the dash cam immediately enters working mode.
Supercapacitors have a much longer lifespan with a high number of charge cycles—up to hundreds of thousands of cycles—far surpassing the longevity of lithium batteries. Additionally, supercapacitors perform better in high-temperature environments and are less likely to suffer from thermal runaway or explosion risks.
Both batteries and supercapacitors have their own advantages, so the choice of which energy storage device to use depends on the specific needs of the user.
