A varistor is a component with nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics, and its resistance value is different in different voltages. Varistors are usually used in circuits to withstand overvoltage in the circuit. When the voltage is too large, the varistor absorbs excess current during voltage clamping to protect other components.

So how does varistor help in air conditioning?
Varistors are used in air conditioners as electronic components for overvoltage protection and high surge absorption. The varistor is connected in parallel at both ends of the primary coil of the power transformer to form a series circuit. The purpose of this is to suppress the surge voltage and prevent the air conditioner from automatically stopping due to the surge voltage under normal working conditions, causing damage to the air conditioner.
Under normal circumstances, the resistance of the varistor is large, which can reach the megohm level. The current flowing through it is only microampere, which can be ignored. It is in an open circuit state and has no effect on the circuit operation. However, when the voltage is too large, the resistance of the varistor suddenly decreases to a few ohms to a few tenths of ohms, the passing current becomes larger, and the fuse is blown to prevent the main circuit board from being burned out and protect other electronic components.
The overvoltage protection of the varistor protects the air conditioner from being damaged by excessive voltage, and keeps us cool in the hot summer. Therefore, the varistor is very important for the air conditioner. Without the varistor, the air conditioner is easily damaged and cannot work normally when faced with excessive voltage.
